Armour of God — Cliff Jump to Tree

Jackie jumped from a cliff aiming to catch a tree branch, but slipped and cracked his skull on a rock. Bone fragments drove into his brain. He bled profusely from his ear and nearly died. Surgeons permanently installed a metal plate in his skull, and he lost hearing in his right ear. This was the closest he ever came to death on set.

Project A 1983

Project A — Clock Tower Fall

Jackie fell from a 15-meter (50 ft) clock tower, crashing through two fabric awnings before landing hard on his neck and back. He performed the stunt three times before he was satisfied. It was a tribute to silent film legend Harold Lloyd's iconic clock stunt.

Injury: Neck sprain, spinal misalignment, cumulative trauma from three takes

Behind the Scenes: He passed out after the first take. When he woke and watched the playback, he thought it wasn't good enough — so he climbed back up and did it twice more. No safety mats were used.

Police Story 1985

Police Story — Mall Pole Slide

Jackie grabbed a metal pole wrapped in decorative Christmas lights from three stories up and slid down. The heat of his hands caused bulbs to explode mid-slide. He crashed through a glass partition on landing. He suffered second-degree burns on his palms, fractured vertebrae, and a dislocated pelvis.

Behind the Scenes: Filmed at 3 AM. Jackie was simultaneously shooting Heart of Dragon during the day and Police Story at night, sleeping just a few hours daily for two months. Exhausted, he nearly lost his grip mid-slide.

Who Am I? 1998

Who Am I? — Rotterdam Building Slide

Jackie slid down the 21-story sloping glass facade of the Willemswerf building in Rotterdam — no wires, no safety harness, nothing. The building face is angled at roughly 45 degrees, making the slide nearly 70 meters (230 ft). Producers billed it as 'the most dangerous stunt in the world.'

Injury: Severe friction burns on hands, wrist ligament strain

Behind the Scenes: It took Jackie two weeks to mentally prepare. His stunt team proved it was possible from lower levels, but he still couldn't bring himself to go from the top. The final take was a one-shot success.

Police Story 3: Super Cop 1992

Police Story 3: Super Cop — Helicopter Ladder

Jackie leaped from a rooftop onto a rope ladder dangling from a hovering helicopter, which then flew over downtown Kuala Lumpur with him hanging on. Wind whipped him around like a rag doll hundreds of feet in the air — sustained entirely by grip strength.

Injury: Shoulder strain, multiple finger lacerations

Behind the Scenes: No CGI was used. The helicopter was real, and Jackie was really hanging from it. The Malaysian government closed multiple downtown streets for the shoot.

Rumble in the Bronx 1995

Rumble in the Bronx — Bridge Jump to Hovercraft

Jackie jumped from a bridge onto a moving hovercraft. He misjudged the landing and broke his ankle. Instead of stopping production, he had a special shoe-like cast made to disguise the injury and finished filming without delay.

Behind the Scenes: Jackie didn't stop filming for a single day. He wore a custom cast shaped like a shoe and completed all remaining action scenes. He only sought proper treatment after wrapping.

Police Story 4: First Strike 1996

First Strike — Helicopter into Frozen Lake

Jackie jumped from a helicopter into a frozen lake in Australia, crashed through the ice, fought underwater, and then had to grapple with an alligator. The freezing water temperature posed a real risk of hypothermia.

Injury: Hypothermia exposure, aggravated shoulder injury

Behind the Scenes: The crew had a hot tub ready onshore because the water was so cold. The alligator was real — its mouth was taped shut, but its tail could still cause serious injury.

Drunken Master II 1994

Drunken Master II — Hot Coals Final Fight

Not a traditional stunt, but widely regarded as one of Jackie's most grueling sequences. He performed barefoot martial arts on red-hot coals exceeding 200°C (400°F). Each take required excruciating physical endurance.

Injury: Second-degree burns on both feet, severe blistering

Behind the Scenes: The coals were real. The stunt team offered to apply heat-protective coating to his feet, but Jackie refused, saying it wouldn't look authentic. Between takes, he had to soak his feet in cold water.

New Police Story 2004

New Police Story — Convention Centre Bungee

Jackie jumped from the roof of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, dangling mid-air with only a safety cord. Though it was a controlled bungee-style stunt, the psychological barrier and risk of collision with the building facade were extreme.

Injury: Neck strain, back abrasions

Behind the Scenes: Jackie was nearly 50 when he filmed this. He joked on set: 'I used to jump off buildings without a rope. Now that I'm older, maybe I'll use one.'

Police Story 2 — Building Explosion Escape

During an explosive stunt, Jackie was engulfed by real flames that were far more powerful than anticipated. His eyebrows and eyelashes were burned off completely, and his hair was severely singed. The blast wave nearly threw him off the building.

Behind the Scenes: The explosive charges misfired, and Jackie was caught directly in the fireball. He later wrote in his autobiography: 'I could smell my own hair burning and thought — Jackie, you might actually die here.'
